Wandu Mountain City

The capital of Gaogouli ——Wandu Mountain City

Wandu Mountain City was one of the most famous cities in the early and middle Gaogouli Kingdom. It was firstly built as a fortress to defend Guonei City and later it was twice established as the capital of the kingdom; therefore, it played a very important role in the history of Gaogouli Kingdom.

The city is in an irregular shape and high in the north and low in the south, resembling a winnow. It is 6,947 meters in circumference. As it is a mountain city, the city wall was built according to the landforms.

The mountains around the city were taken as protective screens. The gateway was built at the valley mouth and the palace was built at the hillside. This is a full embodiment of Chinese traditional fengshui theories. The mountain city was easy to defend, though inside the city it was spacious. It shows a perfect combination of human creation and natural landscape. The selection of the site and the construction of the city made it outstanding among ancient cities.
